How is what he is saying in any? way related to nihilism?
Just because most people weren't exposed to a movement,doesn't mean it didn't happen. The fact that the architecture, language, political and academic thought, art, literature, and trade relations changed so dramatically over the 15th-16th century after centuries of stagnation caused primarily by plagues and Roman Catholic political hegemony? means something. Even if people didn't really notice or think of themselves as living in history. I think you make too strong an argument for nihilism.
Originally all the turtles had red masks. The color coded ones didn't come about till the? original cartoon, presumably so it'd be easier for kids to tell them apart.
The Renaissance was a movement, a massive, long, and actually semi-vague movement. If we didn't note it, how would we describe the lighting of the Dark Ages? The concept of a 'rebirth' fits it perfectly. I do believe it that is was a historical period.

Furthermore, in all my studies of western history never once have I encountered the concept of the renaissance presented as a thing or event that happened...until I heard your straw man argument against it. Always it is presented as a period or era in European history or more accurately a process by? which science, humanism, and rationalism became accepted throughout the continent.
The renaissance artists, especially in early Italian renaissance, painted religious figures because, duh, the church commissioned it. This isn't a mystery. We have records of the church's patronage. Once the money power was more securely in the hands of merchant kings (hello Medici) we start to see tons? of irreligious art. But even then, the church was the biggest patron around.
